Each and everyone of us will, at some point in time, develop some type of eye problem. Some acute disorders include: burning, dry, red, itchy and bloodshot eyes. Other more chronic eye disorders include far or near sightedness, macular degeneration, cataracts, protruding eyes, droopy eyes and glaucoma. Depending on the severity and symptoms present it is imperative to check with your specialist to rule out pathology such as thyroid problems, allergies, jaundice, myasthenia, tumor, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
Many eye problems, eye damage and vision impairment can be linked to underlying diseases. In the case of diabetes it can lead to hemorrhages in the retina which can eventually result in blindness. High blood pressure is associated with blurred vision due to the gradual thickening of the blood vessels. Major eye disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration are age related and progressive disorders. Glaucoma is defined as elevated intralobular pressure with gradual vision loss, where as cataracts are defined as degenerated opacity of the lens. Macular degeneration is the progressive loss of vision due to the degeneration of the macula, which is the part of the retina responsible for fine vision. No matter what disorder is present, it must be emphasized that each individual should consult a specialist such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist on a regular basis.
Due to the fact that almost all eye problems are related to the aging process, it make sense to focus on prevention at an early age. Healthy, well balanced diets, including fruits and vegetables, exercising and adequate amount of rest can all help in slowing down the progression of many eye disorders. Most eye degenerative disorders, from age related macular degeneration to cataracts, are a result of free radical damage.
Herbal supplements have shown great promise to improve eyesight and also play a key role in the prevention of many eye disorders. According to ophthalmologists at Louisiana State University (Archives of Ophthalmology) Zinc supplementation resulted in less deterioration in regards to macular degeneration. In addition, the free radical scavenger Selenium, along with Chromium and Zinc are important for healthy eyes. Most studies have shown that Beta Carotene, a powerful antioxidant, plays an important role in eye function. In combination with Vitamins A, C and E and Selenium it provides a powerful antioxidant and synergistic effect for optimum eye health. Carotenoids, such as Lutein and Zeaxanthin, are also widely reputed to help prevent eye degeneration. In addition to carotenoids, another antioxidant, Lycopene which is derived from tomatoes, has shown great benefits for the protection of eyesight. Lycopene has also been linked to the prevention of some types of cancer such as prostate cancer. The most prominent herbal remedies for eye protection include Bilberry and Eyebright. Bilberry is a great antioxidant which maintains strong, feedable capillary walls. Bilberry plays an important role in the prevention of macular degeneration. Eyebright is an excellent astringent and anti-inflammatory. It is useful for acute or chronic inflammations as well as over sensitivity to light. Some other herbal remedies that are useful include, Grape Seed Extract, Pine Bark and Ginkgo Biloba which are all antioxidants and can be used to promote blood flow and attack free radicals. In addition to Vitamin, Mineral and Herbal supplementation, there are several other approaches that can help the eye. Some things to consider include basic dietary changes to ensure adequate nutrition, detoxification and rejuvenation. Carrots, beets, sea food and kelp, along with a mixture of green and yellow fruits and vegetables should be increased in the diet. In contrast, junk food, alcohol, coffee and cigarettes should be avoided. The key to healthy eyesight is to have regular check ups from a specialist, avoid reading in poorly lit areas and take nutritional measures to ensure health.
