ADD & HDD
Originally published in Natural Living Magazine Volume 2-Issue1There is a new outlook and viewpoint on the disorders Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
The use of pharmacological drugs to treat patients is a major issue. Current studies are correlating ADD and ADHD with many nutritional deficiencies. In addition, some are attributing these disorders to parenting and educational deficiencies. Research on genetic contributions has led to different neuropsychological models of ADD and ADHD and their evolution.
It is speculated that ADD and ADHD are problems with behavioural inhibition. Approximately 5 percent of children are affected and it is more prevalent among boys compared to girls by a factor of 3 to 1.
In addition to possible genetic reasons for ADD and ADHD, I believe that poor dietary habits which deplete our children's bodies of vital nutrients contribute to the overall problem. Other causes include neurological dysfunction, altered brain chemistry, lack of neurotransmitters, or acquired (drugs, toxemia, infections, and radiation).
The key when dealing with ADD or ADHD is to get a proper diagnosis. For ADHD, hyperactivity along with impulsivity must be present for 6 months. A proper differential diagnosis is important since allergies, stress, drugs, learning disabilities, Tourette's Syndrome, or a speech/language disability may or can contribute to inappropriate behaviours.
Common allopathic treatments include stimulants such as Ritalin and Dexedrine with common side effects. These include weight loss, headaches, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, and difficulties falling asleep. In addition to allopathic therapies, there are some natural approaches when dealing with ADD and ADHD. Researchers of ADD and ADHD believe that the nutritional deficiencies stemming from our modern processed food diets may be one of the many causes for these memory-related problems. Sangster's Grapeseed, Ginkgo Biloba, Vitamin E, and CoEnzyme Q10 are excellent antioxidants which protect your body and neutralize free radicals. Your body produces antioxidants naturally; however, chemicals, pesticides, nutrient deficient foods, and stressful unhealthy lifestyle choices can deplete antioxidants in the body.
Due to the numerous causes and complex nature of ADD and ADHD, a holistic approach formula like Sangster's A.D.D. Junior formula is an excellent choice, since many diets are deficient in essential fatty acids.
Using Sangster's Vitamin E, Calcium and Magnesium and Evening Primrose Oil supplies nutrients to the body and the essential fatty acids maintain and enhance normal brain development and functions which are vital for human nutrition and improve the body's ability to deal with daily stress.
It is imperative to have a balanced diet and a daily Sangster's Multi Vitamin supplement to ensure optimum wellness. The diet should include fresh fruits, vegetables, water and adequate fibre. Avoid pop, sweets, cold cuts, canned and processed foods, and pastries. Restoring the body's internal chemical balance naturally may resolve the problems, but counseling and behavioural modification may also be needed.
