Breathe Easy Day In And Day Out

The respiratory system sustains our very existence from moment to moment, yet most of the time it works so well that we do not even notice it functioning. We breathe without thinking about it, day in and day out for our entire lives.

Respiratory ailments vary both in severity and cause. Some involve inflammation, others infections and allergies. Herbs that alleviate irritation and distress are prized among herbalists. Most effective herbal remedies for the respiratory system are comprised of more than one herb. Each lending its own unique healing action to the formula such as Sangster’s LNG (lung) formula.

FENUGREEK

The root contains a volatile oil that holds valuable chemicals used specifically for irritating bronchial coughs, at the same time it has a high content of mucilage that has a soothing and relaxing effect on the mucous membranes of the lungs.

HOREHOUND
This oil works on the respiratory system in two ways. It acts to soothe and relax the smooth muscles of the bronchusand at the same time helps to increase and move mucous out of the lungs.

WILD CHERRY
It will calm the respiratory nerves there-fore quieting coughs and spasms at the same time it soothes the mucous membranes. This is a valuable nutrient to the whole respiratory tract and specifically for cases of bronchitis.

ST. JOHN’S WORT
Is used to purify the blood from contam-inants brought on by bronchial tube irritants like cigarette smoke and industrial air pollutants. It also helps to bring a calming effect to the nervous system, over stressed from battling colds or influenza.

SKUNK CABBAGE
Its root is used in formulas for spasmodic coughs. It has a long history of use as a medicine for the lungs by Aboriginal peoples. It is used in acute, rather than chronic conditions, as a strong expectorant and bronchial anti-spasmodic. It may be used by those with occasional bouts of moist asthma that occurs under emotional duress and with a sense of panic or pain in the chest.

NETTLE
This plant is known to herbalists as a synergistic decongestant that will enhance other herbs in this formula. It is used for sinus allergies, hay fever, asthma and head colds. It is rich in Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium. The high mineral content lends itself to being a nutritious tonic for treating chronic illnesses of the respiratory system.

MULLEIN
Has been used for centuries by herbalists to relieve irritation and congestion of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Mullein leaf has a high content of mucilage and saponins making it an ideal herb for the treatment of respiratory ailments from coughs and colds to emphysema, asthma and whooping cough. In addition to the soothing effects, Mullein possesses many antibiotic properties. Like most herbs, it is not limited to one action, Mullein has been found to assist the movement of the white blood cells, therefore, keeping respiratory tissue in a healthy state by normalizing the flow of fluids in and out of the tissues.

ANISEED
Anise is used for coughs, asthma, bronchitis and aids digestion at the same time. Due to its actions and great taste, it is commonly used to treat the ailments of children.

These are just a few of the many medicinal plants that have proved themselves useful in keeping the respiratory system working efficiently, so that we can continue to breath with ease, bringing oxygen to all the cells of our body.
