Cat's Claw for Indigestion
Originally published in Natural Living Magazine Volume 1 - Issue 1

Most North Americans do not only have poor diets, but also have a digestive system which does not function the way it was designed to work. The advent of abundant food supplies and the related proliferation of drugs designed to ease the suffering of digestive misadventures has lead to a society that has no idea how to respond to digestive problems. Television is filled with advertisements on how to decrease heartburn, relieve constipation and cure ulcers without actually discussing how to solve the root problems.

Many people do not know how to eat. They don't know what foods make them sick, they don't eat in a relaxed environment and don't even know how to chew their food instead of gulping it down. These poor choices lead to disease in the intestinal tract. The most common name for the end result of these habits is Intestinal Dysbiosis. This term describes an intestinal tract that does not digest food properly which results in pain and discomfort, in poor nutrient absorption and in auto-immune disorders derived from the absorption of undigested proteins by the bloodstream. In addition, the average North American suffers from chronic constipation which leads to the reabsorption of toxins held in the large intestine and the production of foul-smelling flatulence.

The first step in the recovery of the intestinal tract is to begin a bowel cleanse with Cat's Claw, also known as U~na De Gato. Cat's Claw is referred to as "The Opener of the Way" because of its remarkable ability to cleanse the entire intestinal tract and help patients suffering from many different stomach and bowel disorders. Cat's Claw is carefully harvested from the bark of trees in the Amazon jungle without permanently damaging the trees. It has long been used by the natives of the Amazon for many reasons. The plant has the ability to prevent rapid cell reproduction, common in infectious disorders and neoplastic conditions such as cancer. Its strong antioxidant properties are demonstrated by its ability to neutralize free radicals found in the urine of smokers, a property which can help to prevent urinary bladder cancers. In conditions of inflammation caused by auto-immune reactions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Gastritis Ulceration, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, Cat's Claw has been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and an immuno-regulator.

Research done in Austria under the direction of Dr. Keplinger showed how Cat's Claw helped to impede the replication of HIV in the blood while at the same time stimulating the T-cells and inhibiting the development of Kaposi's Sarcoma. The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine has had excellent clinical results with the treatment of Crohn's Disease, Gastric Ulcers, Fibromyalgia and Asthma using Cat's Claw.

The intestinal cleanse should consist of taking Cat's Claw in one of the following two forms. As a tea, you should take two to three teaspoons of the dry herb in four cups of pure water. Add the boiling water to the herb and let stand for five to 10 minutes. Drink one cup with each meal. In capsule form, take one 500 mg capsule one hour before each meal.

The following cleansing diet should also be used in conjunction with Cat's Claw. Each day drink as much pure water as you can and eat steamed or raw broccoli, carrots, green beans, peas, baked squash, yams or sweet potatoes. Steamed white rice, organic rice protein powder or a rice drink is beneficial. Fresh or canned peaches and pears and their diluted juice may be used. Three ounces of lean protein per day is allowed, if you wish, consisting of organic poultry or deep sea fish that feed on the surface. Three tablespoons per day of flax seed, borage or extra virgin olive oil is permitted. The following seasonings may be used: sea salt or potassium chloride, parsley, oregano, rosemary, thyme, basil and tamari sauce. If you experience discomfort due to withdrawal symptoms then increase water intake, rest and drink white willow tea. You will have low energy for the first few days and then your energy will pick up on days four and five. It is preferable to have a naturopathic physician monitor your cleanse, especially if you encounter difficulties.
