Male & Female Health
Originally published in Natural Living MagazineFemale Health
Many causes of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are not very well understood. Nor are the complications associated with monthly menstruation (including PMS) and menopause. Historically, these problems have even been thought of as "psychosomatic illnesses." I believe that females can take responsibility and choose alternatives at an early stage in order to prevent unnecessary pain and suffering. As a guiding philosophy, I look to part of the Hippocratic Oath that all physicians must swear: primum non nocere, which means "first, do no harm."My initial approach to these problems is to determine what symptoms exist. Then I decide what herbal and/or vitamin therapy can assist after having eliminated unnecessary lifestyle faults and poor dietary habits. An excellent dietary program includes complex carbohydrates, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and a limitation on the intake of alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, saturated fats, and tobacco smoke. Regular exercise can also help in reducing symptoms and stress. One herb which is well known for its calming effect on menstrual symptoms is Dong Quai, which is available both by itself and in herbal combinations like FEMH. Sufferers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia can find some relief in a special supplement that provides just the right nutrients: Mega Malic Acid and Magnesium.
In addition to these problems, all women about the age of fifty must face menopause. Except in cases of surgical intervention, this is a natural event. Today there is a debate on whether women should consider hormone replacement therapy for this normal condition because some studies have linked this therapy with cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Nutrition, along with proper supplements and exercise, can help to minimize the symptoms of menopause. A diet high in soybeans can promote the natural production of female hormones, and one high in Essential Fatty Acids can help to regulate prostaglandins. Herbal combinations like Meno-EZ can address the many symptoms and underlying problems of menopause. Regular Calcium supplementation can make the difference in cases of osteoporosis. In my opinion, women should weigh the benefits carefully against the possible side effects in order to make informed choices.
Every female must be considered as a unique individual by her health care professional. In any female health concern, we must begin with proper diet, regular exercise, rest and herbal or vitamin supplementation in order to achieve optimum wellness.
Male Health
As we approach the 21st century, the male population is becoming more prone to many severe afflictions such as cardiovascular disease, prostate inflammation, cancer, impotence, liver disease, kidney disease and lung disease. In addition to herbal and vitamin supplements, diet is very important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. According to many researchers, foods like fruits, vegetables, soy products and whole grains can provide health benefits to the prostate. Soy products contain phytoestrogens, whereas fruits and vegetables have flavonoids and carotenoids which may protect men from cardiovascular diseases and organ problems, as can vitamin and herbal combinations like LNG, KB, LIVR, and VCF.
Studies indicate that genistein, which is abundant in soy, could possibly interfere with some of the growth factors that stimulate the proliferation of prostatic tissue. Other supplements that aid in prostate reduction include Saw Palmetto Berries, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Flax Seed Oil, Pygeum and Zinc; often, like in Prost-Eze, some of these ingredients are bundled together for convenience. In addition, the carotenoid known as lycopene can reduce the incidence of prostate cancer.
Impotence is a problem that many men suffer in silence. Instead of feeling embarrassment, men should seek comfort in the many herbal remedies that are available. For example, Ginkgo Biloba aids in circulation; enlarged prostate relief as previously discussed can promote greater blood flow; Puncture Vine (Tribulus Terrestris) can stimulate natural testosterone production; and herbal combinations like Male Plus with Green Oats have a time tested success rate. Besides foods that consist of carotenoids and genistein, certain oils are also essential for good health. These oils, such as Flax Seed Oil and Salmon Oil, contain Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids and help to prevent arteries from hardening and to relieve pain and inflammation. As men approach age 50, it is important to get regular and thorough physical check ups as well as having the prostate examined.
Most patients should continue to take supplements and cut back on processed foods, red meat, salt, alcohol and smoking. Exercise, massage and eating a variety of soy products are also beneficial. Consuming a variety of foods promotes balance, especially when whole grains, seeds, nuts, vegetables and fruits are on the menu. The goal should be to focus on a high fibre, low fat diet with lots of water in order to prevent serious health problems.
