Immunity

Our immune defense system helps protect us against infection. A weakened immune system results in increased susceptibility to several types of illnesses. Some common causes include allergic reactions, prolonged stress, nutritional deficiencies, unhealthy diet, a pre-existing disease, the aging process, or drug therapy.

In order to build our immunity it is important that the body learns to identify and remember specific foreign substances such as viruses, bacteria and other disease agents (antigens). It does so through cell-mediated immunity where by our white blood cells (T lymphocytes) destroy micro-organisms (antigens). Our immune system is also involved in the production of antibodies, which is called humoral immunity. Our antibodies are specific proteins and are produced by another group of white blood cells (B lymphocytes).

The approach to strengthen the immune system in each case has to be considered individually. Simply "catching a cold" or getting other infections is a signal that our immune system is not functioning optimally. Factors, such as emotional and mental stresses, must be addressed when considering holistic treatment. Herbal medicine is excellent when dealing with poor immunity because many herbs have anti-microbial action. In addition, herbs augment and vitalize the body's own defenses. The best anti-microbials include Echinacea, Eucalyptus, and Garlic. In addition to Echinacea, Astragalus and Goldenseal are also excellent herbs that boost the immune system and enhance lymphatic function. Generally, Goldenseal should not be taken for more than 7-10 days at a time, and Echinacea should be taken for two weeks followed by a one to two week rest period.

In addition to herbs, specific nutrients can be used to enhance immune function. Extensive studies have been done on antioxidants containing Proanthocyanidins, which help boost the immune system. Products such as Grape Seed, Pycnogenol, and Immu-Boost can be used to strengthen the immune system. Another source of antioxidants are Vitamins including Beta Carotene, Vitamins A, C, E and the Mineral Selenium, due to their role in decreasing susceptibility to infections. A Multi Vitamin and Mineral supplementation with a high level of B complex Vitamins is important since it aids with stress and supports the nervous system. Finally, green products such as Mega Greens are important to include along with a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as foods high in fibre and Essential Fatty Acids in order to protect the body from free radical damage.

The aim in dealing with the immune system is restoring the normal resistance of the body. One has to deal with a holistic treatment ensuring health and vitality of the whole body emotionally, psychologically, and physically. Even our society, environmental surroundings, hygiene, and sanitation must be addressed to promote our health and wellness at all levels.
